Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series V8 (VDJ70 / 1VD-FTV) 2016-2024
Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series V8 Tuning (VDJ70 / 1VD-FTV)
About The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series V8
The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series V8 (VDJ76, VDJ78 and VDJ79), powered by the 1VD-FTV 4.5-litre turbo-diesel, is one of the most respected platforms ever built for towing, touring and heavy-duty use in Australia.
From the factory, however, the 70 Series is intentionally detuned to meet global emissions standards, fuel quality variations and conservative durability targets. The result is a highly reliable vehicle — but often lacks the torque delivery, throttle response and drivability Australian owners expect, especially when towing or carrying a load.
At Diesel & Performance Tuning Brisbane, we specialise in safe, torque-focused ECU calibration for the LandCruiser 70 Series V8 — prioritising real-world performance and long-term reliability, not marketing numbers.

ECU Remap
The factory ECU calibration on the 1VD-FTV V8 is highly conservative, particularly in torque delivery and throttle response. An ECU calibration optimises engine control, improving torque, drivability, and overall performance while maintaining safe operating limits for touring and towing. Key benefit: stronger, smoother torque with OEM-level reliability.

Thermofan Upgrade
The factory intercooler fan can struggle to control charge air temperatures under sustained load, partcularly in the Australian summer. An upgraded thermofan kit is compeltely plug and play, requiring no cutting or soldering and drastically improves cooling efficiency by up to 30%, providing more consistent performance ad better temperature control during towing, off-road use, and high ambient conditions. Our unit includes a digital thermocontroller, meanign teh fans do not run directy from igntion or accesosry power, until engine bay termapture reaches 40C, the point at which the vehicle begins to compensate fuel and boost control for charge air temperatures. This is essential for improved heat management on tuned V8s.

Snorkel Upgrade (Choice of Plastic or Stainless)
A snorkel improves intake airflow while drawing cooler, cleaner air from a higher position. The OEM snorkel head is quite restritive, where a gain of 5kW is common when replacing it, or upgrading the entire snorkel assembly to an upgraded unit to support sharper pedal repsonse, and reliable performance, especially when towing, touring, or operating in dusty or wet conditions, partivclary when completing creek crossings offroad. Supports airflow, engine protection, and provides consistent performance.
- Stage 1 - Snorkel Head (Fits OEM Snorkel)
- Stage 2, 3, 3+ Choice of TJM AirTec, ARB Safari Plastic or 4" Stainless in Black or Brushed Seamless

Clutch Upgrade
Increased torque from any tuning upgrades exceed the capacity of the factory clutch. A 1300Nm or1600Nm clutch upgrade is required pending the package and torque output, to ensure reliable torque transfer, prevent clutch slip and maintain drivability under high load. Required for all torque levels on the 1VD-FTV.
- Clutch Upgrade (1300Nm or 1600Nm)
- Pressure Plate
- Flywheel
- Spigot Bearing
- Throwout Bearing
- Rear Main Crankshaft Seal

Exhaust Upgrade
The factory exhaust system is a very restrictive, press bent, amss-prodiced unit, and increases backpressure once torque is increased. A 3.5" DPF-back exhaust improves exhaust flow, providing more efficient power delivery. 3" options are availble where space is of concern (toolboxes, trays, water tanks), as well as various combinations in 3"-3.5" single and twin exit, full systems from turbo-back for non-DPF models and systems compatible with airbags, GVM upgrades, coil conversions and more. We have you covered. Overall, an exhaust upgrade on the VDJ70 improves response, sound, and thermal control.
- 3.0" or 3.5" Exhaust Upgrade
- Options for Single, Twin, GVM, Coil Conversion, Extension All Available - ***Please Advise**

Factory Characteristics of the 1VD-FTV (70 Series)
In standard form, many VDJ70 vehicles display:- Noticeable throttle delay
- Conservative torque delivery at low and mid RPM
- Restrictive factory torque management
- Power delivery that feels flat under towing load
- Calibration compromises to suit global markets
- These traits are normal and intentional — but they also leave substantial room for improvement when the engine is calibrated correctly.
Our LandCruiser 70 Series V8 Tuning Approach
We do not use generic “flash and dash” files or plug-in tuning chips. Each LandCruiser 70 Series V8 is tuned using a custom ECU calibration, developed specifically for:- Your exact model (VDJ76 / VDJ78 / VDJ79)
- Vehicle mileage and condition
- Intended use (touring, towing, work, remote travel)
- Supporting modifications (exhaust, clutch, cooling upgrades)
Power & Torque Gains (Real-World Focus)
Rather than chasing peak dyno figures, our 70 Series tuning delivers:- Stronger low-RPM and mid-range torque
- Improved throttle response
- Smoother, more controlled power delivery
- Reduced strain when towing or climbing under load
Land Cruiser ECU Multi-Mapping (Optional)
For all 70 Series V8 Land Cruiser vehicles (2007-2024), we offer ECU Multi-Mapping, allowing the driver to switch between multiple calibrated modes. Typical map configurations may include:- Reduced Power / Valet

Reliability-First Calibration Philosophy
The 1VD-FTV is a robust engine, but reliability depends on correct calibration and mechanical condition. Before tuning, we consider:- Service history and current vehicle health
- Known 70 Series drivetrain limitations
- Cooling system, induction, turbocharger and exhaust condition
- Clutch suitability for increased torque
